William married Harriet Cady on 14 August, 1842 in St Joseph County, Indiana [2]. They appear in the 1850 census [3] in Indiana with children Harriet, 4, and Matthew, 1. In the 1860 Census ;[4] Harriet "Nicholes" is listed as head of household in Niles, Michigan with children Emily, 13, Frank, 10, Amanda, 8, Laura, 6 and "Lanson", 3. Where was William? Is "Lanson" really "Francis"? See the profile for Harriet for more discussion of her marriages and children.
The 1870 census for Elk, Clayton, Iowa [5] shows WIlliam Nichals (sic), Harriet, Frank (born in Indiana), 20, Amanda (born in Michigan), 16, and Francis (born in Michigan), 12. Are William and Harriet together again? Or did William mis-report to the census taker? The 1870 census for Michigan (see [[ Cady-1310 shows Harriet (Parker) and daughter Laura with John Parker.
The 1880 federal census [6] lists William, a farmer, age 66; his son Francis, a farm laborer, age 23; and boarders John, 51, Eliza, 43, Araminta, 13, and Magie, 4 (all Nichols). John is WIlliam's brother; William's father's birthplace is listed as Pennsylvania and his mother's as New Jersey. The 1885 Iowa state census [7] lists William, a farmer, age 71, his son Francis, 27, Helena, 22, and Emma, age 1, residing in Elk, Clayton, Iowa. The next census family is John, with his wife and daughter.
William died August 14, 1891 in Elkport, Clayton, Iowa.
