Biography

In the 1851 census, Rodney and his wife "Emma A" are living in Houghton, Norfolk, Canada West (Ontario) with three very young sons (ages 4, 2, and 1, the youngest not named yet). The agricultural return shows them on concession 3, lot 1, with 100 acres. Only 7 acres are cleared (93 are wood/wild), and they have 4 acres of crops (3 of which are wheat) and 3 of pasture.

In the 1861 census, Rodney and his wife "Ama A" are living in Houghton with six sons and one daughter. He gives his occupation as "farmer" and his religion as "Methodist". They live in a 1-storey frame house. The children are aged 13 down to 1, and the oldest five attended school in the year.

In the 1861 Agricultural return, Rodney's concession or range looks to be "3 M 1/2", and the Lot or part of Lot is "1". They have a total of 100 acres, 50 of which are cleared (41 in crops and 9 in pasture), and 50 wooded or wild. They produce fall and spring wheat, peas, oats, buckwheat, Indian corn, potatoes, turnips, and hay. (The return gives acreages and bushels of yield for each).

In 1871 they are in the same location in Houghton, Norfolk South, Ontario. They have eight children at home, ages 21 down to 3. Rodney and his two eldest sons give their occupation as "farmer". The family's religion is "Wesleyan Methodist". In 1881 Rodney is 61 and they have only four children at home, ages 22 down to 13. Rodney and the two eldest again give their occupation as "farmer", and their religion is written down as "C Meth", which might refer to the Methodist Church of Canada.

Rodney passed away in 1890, at 71 years of age. He is buried in the Hemlock cemetery near Houghton, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada.
