Blair Leroy Mutimer, Sr.

Blair was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to Robert Ross Mutimer and Lelia Anna McAlpine. He was born July 4, 1915[1][2]. Before he was 5, the family moved to Augusta, Georgia. His family and his uncle, John Calvin's family came to Georgia to become dairy farmers. His uncle did not stay but instead returned to Pennylvania. His family stayed and thrived. They operated the Meadowbrook Dairy.

Blair married Lillie Blackwell Wednesday November 4, 1936[3], and they had 4 children.

  1. Private Daughter (1930s-2010s)
  2. Private Daughter (1940s-2020s)
  3. Private Son (1940s-2020s)
  4. Private Son (1940s-still living)

He worked as a carpenter, mechanic, roofer, metal worker and a brick mason. When the children were small, he was drafted into the army and recieved basic training at Camp Blanding in Florida. He became an expert rifleman and was sent to Germany as a replacement in the 30th Division where he was a machine gunner. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action.[4] After the war, he worked as a brick mason for several years before starting Blair Construction Company. He cleared land, paved streets and parking lots, and laid water and sewer pipes. [5]

I know that he had an accident at some point in his life that took part of his hand. He turned a tractor over and became stuck underneath. I don't know if he was a child or adult when this happened. His hand and his gruesome way of telling me the story always fascinated me as a child.

Living next door to my grandfather, I remember the construction business being in his back yard. My Aunt Merle lived in a house above ours, and above her was the garden. He planted it every year. I used to help feed his chickens, and my favorite was hunting the eggs. They were hidden all over the yard, and it was like easter every day. My mother told me, when I was very small, he built a new chicken coop. When he went inside for lunch, I moved all my dolls inside the coop. Very soon after, I had a new playhouse of my own, built by my grandfather so I would stay out of his coop.
