Biography

Graddy was born in 1805. He was the son of Pearce Mozingo and Sarah Grady.

Not until the 1850 census do we find any detail on the family, living in Wayne County, North Carolina.[1]

  • Grady Mosingo (sic) (Graddy Mozingo) b. c. 1805 - farmer
  • Mary Mosingo, 37

Among their children were:

  1. John Mosingo, 16 - farmhand
  2. Sarah Mosingo, 12
  3. Unity Mosingo, 10
  4. Elizabeth Manngo (sic) (Mozingo), 7 [presumptive - no notes on the census record indicate a different family relationship - the page turned and perhaps the census taker failed to look back at the previously used surname spelling - the spelling of which was also incorrect]
  5. Babo Manngo, 5 [presumptive]

In the 1860 census, Graddy's household is now Fork District, Wayne, North Carolina.[2]

  • Graddy Mozingo b. c. 1800
  • Polly Mozingo, 51

Children in the household:

* Unity Mozingo, 18, m. 14 Oct 1869 William L Peacock[3]
* Betsy (presumably Elizabeth Manngo from 1850), 16
* Barbara Mozingo (presumably Babo Manngo from 1850), 13
  1. William Mozingo, 17 - not captured in 1850(?) - farm laborer; William m. 27 Jan 1870 Temperance Pike[4]

Lastly, in the 1870 Pikeville, Wayne census, Graddy Mozingo, now reported as 67 is living with his wife, Polly (57) and the following children:

  1. Sallie A Mozingo, 32
  2. Vinetty / Vinetta Mozingo, 8
* Daniel D Mozingo, 8 - apparent child of Sally / Sallie Mozingo, who shows up in her household where she is named as Doity (sic) (Doughty - her later husband) in the 1880 census.[5]
* Betcy M Mozingo, 26
* Barbry A Mozingo, 24

He passed away in 1880.

To be done:

Sally Mozingo apparently was the mother of Daniel D Mozingo. (Her surname in the census appears to acknowledge him, despite the spelling, but they didn't actually marry until later.)
