Biography

Margaret was a Friend (Quaker)

The birth of Margaret, daughter of David Mote Sr and Dorcas Nichols, has not been found in extant primary sources but is found in later family records as 28 Feb 1753 and likely in Orange County, North Carolina where her parents had married the prior year.

Her marriage to James Patty is generally seen as 1770, the year prior to the birth of their first daughter, however, South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research places the marriage in 1769.[1] The family lived in Ninety Six District, South Carolina, between the Broad and Saludy Rivers.[2][3]

Margaret's date of death is not known with certainty. She wrote her will on 14 Jan 1803 and it was proved 7 Mar 1803 placing her death between these dates. She is presumed interred at Bush River Quaker Cemetery, Newberry, South Carolina. There is no grave marker and in keeping with Quaker practice of the period, her grave was most likely marked only with a plain rock or stone.[4]

Fairly sure the birth location as Newberry is incorrect. Her parents are documented in the Cane Creek MM minutes in 1753. See father's profile.
