Biography

Origin

Ellen was christened on July 9, 1587 at Manchester Cathedral, Manchester, England.[1] Ellen was the daughter of Anthony Mosley.[2]

Family

Ellen married twice.

  • She married 13 November 1606 at Manchester Cathedral, Manchester, England, as her 1st, to Walter Nugent "Newgent."[1] Walter was buried on 10 March 1613/4.[1] under the heading "Weddinges in November 1606" the marriage record reads, "13. Wa[lt]er Neugent & Elline Mosley"; their marriage license was dated October 29, 1606 (see also "Mosley Memoranda", p. 14).
  • On 16 December 1615, Henry Sewall obtained a license to marry, as his 2nd and her 2nd, to Ellen (Mosley) Nugent, daughter of Anthony Mosley and widow of Walter Nugent.[2] [ this wedding appears to have occurred at Ashton-on-Mersey, Cheshire or Didsbury, Lancashire, England; the marriage license was dated December 1615; Henry was said to be "of Tetlow" at the time of the marriage (see "Mosley Memoranda", p. 14) and this was his third marriage].

When Ellen and Henry married, he had a son with his 1st wife, who was only about four months old, Henry Sewall (bpt 25 June 1615 Manchester, immigrated 1634; mar Jane Drummer).[2]

Court Action

On 6 October 1635, soon after their arrival in Massachusetts, the Court ordered that "with the consent of Henry Sewall, & Ellen his wife, the court hath ordered that his said wife shall be at her own disposal, for the place of her habitation, & that her said husband shall allow her her wearing apparel, & £20 per annum, to be paid quarterly, as also a bed with furniture to it."[2] On 5 June 1638, "Henry Sewall being presented by the grand jury for beating his wife is referred to the court of Ipswich to examine & he to appear without any new summons."[2]

Death and Legacy

Ellen died in 1657 at Essex, England.[citation needed]

Henry was buried at Rowley in "1 mo. 1656," (March 1655/6).[2] On 25 March 1656, the court recorded that Henry had died intestate leaving an estate valued at about £300 and that his son, Henry Shewall, Jr., was in England leaving Henry Short of Newbury as his attorney and representative.[2]

Research notes

  • Ellen MOSLEY was born in 1587, almost certainlky at The Milngate, Manchester, Lancashire, England -- the fourth child and first daughter of Anthonie MOSLEY and Alice WEBSTER Mosley.
  • She was baptized on July 9, 1587 at the Collegiate Church of St. Mary, St. Denys and St. George, Manchester, Lancashire, England; under the heading "Christenings in Julie 1587" the baptismal record reads, "9 Elline daughter to Anthonie Mosley" (see also "Mosley Memoranda", p. 14).[3]
  • Ellen MOSLEY Nugent Sewell was quite certainly still alive in 1630, when she was named as a beneficiary in the will of Margaret Nugent (see "Mosley Memoranda", p. 14).
  • There is a great deal of evidence to support the hypothesis that Ellen was one of the earliest members of the MOSLEY families to emigrate to America (with her husband Henry SEWELL or SEWALL in about 1635), but definitive evidence is hard to find.
  • There were certainly two Henry SEWELLs (father and son) who emigrated to America in the 1630s. SEWELL family histories strongly imply that the elder of these two Henry SEWELLs is the same individual as the one who married Ellen MOSLEY, but whether Ellen was still alive and went with him is not formally well documented. There is no mention of Ellen in the formal historical record of the SEWELL family in America (see Duff HL."The Sewells in the New World", Exeter, Chap II).
  • There appears to be a private diary in existence suggesting that, "on 5 June 1638 Ellen Mosley and Henry Sewall were living in Ipswich, Massachusetts, when her husband was presented to the grand jury for beating her." This information would appear to correlate with (a) information that the elder Henry SEWELL who emigrated to America was hot tempered and (b) information in "Family Memoirs" (see pp. 24-25) suggesting that one of Ellen's marriages was an unhappy one -- although "Family Memoirs" seems to place the blame unfairly on Ellen's first husband, Walter NUGENT, which does not actually appear to be the case.
  • If this information is correct, then Ellen MOSLEY Nugent Sewell may have died in Ipswich, Massachusetts Bay Colony some time after 1638, but we are not currently aware of any documented evidence of here death or burial.
