Biography

Unknown was a Friend (Quaker)
Unknown (Mortimer) James was a William Penn fleet passenger.

Margaret Jane Mortimer was born circa 1660 in Wales. Margaret was the daughter of Edward Mortimer (1631-1704) of Fyfield, Witltshire, England and Catherine Houston of Yatesbury, Wiltshire, England. [1][2]

Marriage

According to the family Bible of Mary Susan James (1836-1905) of Bedford County, Virginia, David James of Llandegley and Glascwm parishes in Radnorshire, Wales. married his first wife Margaret Jane Mortimer on November 27, 1680 at Radnorshire, Wales. [3] According to a brief mention in the Radnor Monthly Meeting record, David and Margaret were well known to Quakers at Llandegley, Radnorshire before they immigrated to Pennsylvania.[4]

Immigration

In 1682, David and Margaret emigrated to Pennsylvania with their infant daughter, Mary James.[5] The young family of three were passengers on The Bristol Factor's second voyage.[6] David James received Welsh tract lands granted by William Penn.

David James, Margaret and Mary their daughter were recorded in the Radnor Quaker Men's Meeting on the 20th of the 5th Month, 1683. [7][8]

Children

Known children include:

  1. Isaac James
  2. Mary James Davis - 1681–1732
  3. Thomas James - 1690–1753
  4. Rebecca James Miles - 1705–1752
  5. Evan James - 1715–1793

Death

The date and place of her death are unknown to the family as well as the place of her burial. Her last son, Evan James, was born in 1715, 35 years following her marriage to David. [9]

Research Notes

Some online trees and articles have Margaret described as being a daughter of Edward Mortimer and Katherine (Houlton) who lived in Trowbridge Wiltshire. So far no evidence or primary sources whatsoever have been found for her as a daughter of Edward and Katherine Mortimer of Trowbridge. Edward does not mention a daughter called Margaret in his Will. A baptism record for Margaret has not yet been found. The Jane Mortimer born in Trowbridge in 1667 ( baptised as Joane ), married Samuel Watts, as confirmed in her father's Will. This is all completely wrong. There was a Margaret (maiden name NOT Mortimer) who was a Quaker and was married to a David James, also a Quaker. But they only brought one child to America; a daughter Mary. The other children attributed to Margaret are not hers.
