Biography

Disputed origins

Her parents are unknown. Some sources spell her maiden surname "Morrell", although it is Morrill on her headstone (cenotaph).[1]

Mary's parents were shown here at one time as Abraham Morrill (Morrill-485) and Abigail Powell (Powell-5782). These parents are impossible, as both were born after Mary. For these reasons, they have been removed as her parents. Please do not add parents to Mary without discussing it first on G2G.

Another set of alleged parents: Richard Morrill and Joan Childe

Birth

Most sources simply state "England" and estimate dates between 1617 and 1623. Her cenotaph says "1620 Norfolk England".[2] Some trees at IGI suggest that Mary was born at Fowey, Cornwall,[3] although no source/s for this are provided.

Migration from England

According to Benjamin Hard Gardner (The Genealogy of the Gardner Family; 1953), Mary was an indentured servant employed by a Mrs. Peters (wife of the Rev. Hugh Peters), and arrived on the same ship as Peter Folger (ship Abigail, arrived MA in 1635).

Other possible departures/arrivals:

1635, Ship Defence, arr. Salem, Massachusetts[citation needed] Her name is not found on the manifest, but as an indenturee, it is possible that she wouldn't be mentioned.
1638 dep. Norwich, Norfolk, England[4]

Marriage

Husband: Peter Folger.

Most sources say they were married 1644, in Nantucket.[5] Others estimate dates as early as 1640 although some claim "23 June" in either 1642 or 1623, at Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard.[3]

They had the following children: [6]

  1. Joanna Folger
  2. Bethia Folger
  3. Doras Folger
  4. Eleazer Folger
  5. Bathsheba Folger
  6. John Folger
  7. Experience Folger
  8. Patience Folger
  9. Abiah Lee Folger

Death

It is said that Mary "so widened out in later years that she had to sit in a special chair which she carried with her whenever she went visiting neighbors."[7]

1704 Nantucket, Nantucket, Massachusetts.[8]

Morrel-67 and Morrill-135 appear to represent the same person because: clear duplicates; please merge.
It states here that Mary's name is spelled on the Cenotaph with an "i" but it is pretty clear that the cenotaph has Morrell & not Morrill.

I would expect that she came from the area from which Rev. Hugh Peters came from since she was under his employ. I would think there would be a contract somewhere. Possibly Essex. He was from Cornwall but after he married I think he was in London & Essex & Wickford. I plan to research these areas in hopes of coming up with her family.

Should the Quaker Sticker be removed? Her husband's profile says they were Baptists, not Quakers.
I would. I also read that they were not actually Quakers. Also, I wanted to say that I checked the manifest for the Abigail on which she was said to have come to America on but I did not find any Peters, Morrells, or Folgers on this ship or any spelling closely resembling it. Not all 220 names were on the list but you would think one of these three names would have been listed.

I've gone ahead and removed the Quakers sticker.
Since there are several suggestions for parents, all incorrect according to biography, I'm going to project protect this profile. Will add disputed origins.
Their daughter, Abiah Folger, married Josiah Franklin and they are Benjamin Franklin’s parents.

Abraham Morrill is her uncle, Isaac is her father.

"We do not know for sure when Abraham Morrill emigrated to New England, however he most likely came on the ship Lyon in 1632 with his older brother Isaac... Abraham Morrill died in Roxbury while visiting his brother. The will of Abraham Morrill is signed two days before his death, the signature being not much more than a scribble." http://morrillonline.com/morrillabraham-1615-1662/

Peter Folger and Mary Morrill, are Benjamin Franklin's grandparents.
