Marie Morin
Note: named Marie Flamande on her daughter's marriage in 1726
In 1679, Jacques Vigor/Viger entered into a contract of marriage with Marie Morin
Marriage 1
This marriage did not go well at all, Marie's half-sister Louise Pichard, separated from her husband Jean Mardor, came to live with them. All sorts of trouble ensued, they all got evicted from where they were residing in the employment of Jacques LeBer, who found the presence of Louise Pichard there scandalous. Altercations and trials ensued. Jacques Viger dit le Galop placed Marie in the employment of someone (unnamed), a few weeks after coming out of jail in 1680, and was living bigamously with Louise Pichard, which was punishable by hanging or other death method; the two then fled to New England, abandoning Marie.[4]
Marie had gone back to her parents' home after some years, and from there she found work in the house of Dame de Blainville. This was where she was working when she was seduced by baron Antoine Tonty, lieutenant of a marine company. She bore him a son, Louis. She had been banished from the city of Ville-Marie after having been accused of prostitution, being 7 months pregnant then.[4] Louis was born 11 April 1688 in Lachine[5] He died in infancy, being buried as Louis Tonty on 24 Dec 1690 in Montréal[6]
Marriage 2
Marie Morin and jean Bouteiller had a daughter, Marie Jeanne (baptism not found), but Jean wanted to marry Marie. Since Jacques Vigor had left the country years before, Marie was in the untenable position of either living alone or being accused of scandalous behaviour. The Grand-Vicar François Dollier de Casson called the couple before him to stop the scandal, and seeing that they wanted to marry, took steps to annul Marie's prior marriage to Jacques Vigor. This was done on 15 June 1695. They then married without prior contract on 23 June 1695 in Notre-Dame of Montréal[7]
The two had the following children:
Jean died of fever on 4 Oct 1698 and was buried the same day in Montréal (ND)[9], being given the approximate age of 40 on the record.
Marriage 3
Despite being pregnant from her second husband, Thomas Letendre dit St-Thomas and Marie Morin wanted to get married. Thomas was with a Marine company, and wanted to take advantage of a premium given to soldiers who settled in the colony, which had a limited time for him to apply for. There was objection from some quarters to doing the marriage so quickly, since she was pregnant still, but they took their case to the Grand-Vicar, accompanied by Marie Morin's father Jacques Morin, her brother-in-law Pierre Hardouin and 2 other witnesses; the Grand-Vicar not being able to change their minds, he agreed to the marriage and with least amount of ceremony there and then married them on Jan 1, 1699[4]. He asked a sulpician priest, De Breslay, write up the marriage act.[10]
The following children are born to them:
Thomas Letendre dit St-Thomas died in 1739.
It was in extreme poverty after the death of Thomas and of many of her children that Marie finally wound up at Hôpital général de Montréal hospital, which was also the hospice for the poor.[4]
