Biography

Mary was born about 1859 to Samuel Morgans and Charlotte Morgans nee Walters in Margam, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom.
Mary was baptised^[1][2]on 28 February 1859 at the Chapel of Ease, Margam. At the time of this ceremony the family were residing in Forge, Port Talbot, Glamorgan and her father Samuel was working as a Furnaceman.

The April 1861 census^[3]shows Mary, with her grandfather John Walters, a Blacksmith, grandmother Gwenny Walters, father Samuel Morgans, a Labourer at the Tin Plate Works, mother Charlotte Morgans, sister Ann and cousin David James, a Labourer in the Tin Plate Works, living in Margam Tin Plate Cottages, Aberavon, Glamorgan.

The April 1871 census^[4]shows Mary, with her father Samuel Morgans, a Finer at the Tin Plate Works, mother Charlotte, sisters Ann, Margaret and Catherine. all attending school and brother John, living in Water Street, Aberavon, Glamorgan. Mary attended school.

The couple celebrated the birth^[5]of John Bowen during the fourth quarter of 1879 in the registration district of Llanelly, Carmarthenshire.

The April 1881 census^[6]shows Mary living with her son John Alfred in Union Buildings, Llanelly, Carmarthenshire. Mary is noted as a Tin Worker's wife.

The couple celebrated the births^{[7][8][9][10][11]}of Mary, Sydney, David, Thomas and Margaret during the fourth quarters of 1881, 1883, 1885, 1887 and 1889 respectively and all within the registration district of Llanelly, Carmarthenshire.

The April 1891 census^[12]shows Mary, with her husband John Bowen, a Doubler at the Tin Plate Works, sons John, Sydney, David and Thomas, all attending school and daughters Mary, a Scholar and Margaret, living in Bryncaerau Terrace, Borough, Llanelly, Carmarthenshire.

The couple celebrated the birth^[13]of Gertrude during the fourth quarter of 1891 in the registration district of Llanelly, Carmarthenshire.

The March 1901 census^[14]shows Mary, with her husband John Bowen, a Rollerman at the Tin Plate Works, sons John, a Riser at the Tin Plate Works, Sydney, a Riser at the Tin Plate Works, David, a Greaser at the Tin Plate Works and Thomas and daughters Margaret and Gertrude, living in Amos Street, Llanelly, Carmarthenshire.

The April 1911 census^[15]shows Mary, with her husband of thirty three years, John Bowen, a Casual Labourer at a Colliery, son David, an underground Haulier at the Colliery and daughter Gertrude, living in a three roomed property at Bethania Cottage, Grovesend, Pontarddulais, Glamorgan. All the occupants, except Gertrude, speak both Welsh and English.

The baptism registration notes the surname spelling as Morgan.
