Obituary.
EDWARD (TED) MORGAN.
With the death yesterday of Edward Morgan, of Wambanumba, known far and wide as just plain "Ted," passed a popular figure, who could yarn for hours of adventures with bush-rangers, floods and fires in the old days. His story, which provides many a thrill, appeared in the "Chronicle" some three years ago, and is still remembered by most readers. Ted Morgan spent most of his life in the employ of Messrs. Cobb and Co., as driver of mail coaches. He was born in Queen Street, Golden Square, London, 91 years ago. At the age of two years he came to New South Wales. He has spent his last 25 years at Wambanumba, and was also at Murringo for several years. He was married to Bridget Casey, who survives him. For many years the late Mr. Morgan was licensee of that former famous old landmark, the Wambanumba Hotel, the license of which was eventually transferred to Milvale. For 55 years Ted Morgan drove the mail coach. He had contracts over several routes at various times, including between Goulburn and Taralga, Goulburn and Wheeo, Burrowa and Young, Burrowa and Cowra via Breakfast Creek, Burrowa and Cowra via Murringo, Young, and Grenfell, Young and Bimbi, Young and Temora. He was familiar with all the Bland country. Ted Morgan was never at a loss to tell stories of meetings with bush-rangers. He had met in his time Gardiner, Johnny Morgan, Ben Hall, Gilbert and Dunn. He also tells of an encounter with a blackfellow who tried to hold him up. Ted whipped up his horses and got by. Later that day two young fellows were traversing the same route with a dray containing station supplies, such as bran, flour, sugar and pollard. They camped for the night beneath the dray, and were murdered in their sleep by the blackfellow. Another time Ted Morgan used to speak of was when he drove the mail through a 7-mile flood in the Bland. Picking the road by means of a stump here and post there was no easy task. Yet another adventure in the Bland was when he was crossing a flooded creek in a sulky. The horse slipped and floundered in deep water, throwing Ted off his seat. Ted succeeded in cutting loose the breeching straps and trace, caught hold of the horse's tail, and was taken to safety by the animal, which swam to the nearest dry ground. Besides the widow, surviving members of the family are Mrs. J. Grime, of Sydney; Mrs. W. H. McCabe, of Wambanumba; Mrs. E. E. Grounds, of Bendick Murrell; and Mrs. H. Perrin, of Young. The funeral took place from Patterson's Funeral Parlours at 1.30 p.m. to-day. There was a large and representative number of mourners and sympathiser, for the late Mr. Morgan was held in the highest esteem throughout the district. The officiating minister was the Rector of St. John's (Rev. K. L. McKeown), and the interment took place in the Anglican part of the cemetery. [6]
