According to Rachel Elizabeth Hamilton Willis in 2004, the children of this family were named after characters in a favorite book of Sally Bedinger Morgan's: "The Children of the Abbey," a popular Gothic romance by Regina Maria Roche (published in 1796). My research reveals that the male protagonist of the story was "Lord Mortimer", so this tradition may be correct. --Robert B. Nichol
