Heli Thomas Morgan (also spelled Eli) was born into slavery about 1850 in Virginia, the son of Julia Ann Jackson and Peter George Morgan.
His father Peter was born enslaved in Nottoway County and worked as a shoemaker to purchase his own freedom, then bought the freedom of his wife and children before emancipation, and in 1869 was elected as a Virginia state legislator to represent the town of Petersburg, Dinwiddie County.[1]
In October 1869, Eli was working at his father's saloon in Petersburg when he was shot and badly injured by James Lanthrop, a former Confederate soldier.[2]
In the 1870 census, he was 20 years old and living with his parents and six siblings in Petersburg. He was in school and his father was working in the Virginia House of Assembly.[3]
He married Georgianna "Georgie" Washington on 15 October 1873 in Petersburg, Dinwiddie County, Virginia.[4] Their children included:
In the 1880 census, Eli and Georgianna were living in Petersburg with three children and Georgie's mother Adaline Washington. Eli was working as a bar keeper.[5]
Heli (Eli) Thomas Morgan passed away at some point after the 1880 census.
