James was born in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, in about 1837 (exact date of birth unknown), and was baptized at St Peter's, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, on 17 September 1837.[1] He was the son of Edward Morgan and his wife Mary France. In his son George's marriage record James' middle name is stated to be Edward (which was his father's name), but we have nothing to corroborate that. It must be borne in mind that James died when George was less than five years old.
James married Emma Eagle at St John's, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, on 30 May 1859[2]. They went on to have at least six children together.
England Census of 1841[3]:
James lived with his parents and six siblings, and a lady who was possibly his grandmother, at Tower Street, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.
England Census of 1851[4]:
James lived at Tower Street, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire with his parents, three brothers, plus his married sister and her two children.
England Census of 1861[5]:
James lived with his wife, three children, and his mother-in-law, at Temple Street, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.
James' youngest child was born in February of 1869, and his wife is stated to have been a widow in her listing in the England Census of 2 April 1871, so James must have died before then, but after about July 1868. The only plausible death record we have yet encountered is of a James Morgan, age 33, in Lichfield on 18 February 1871 (GRO Vol 06B Page 265), and this could be our man, but we have nothing at this time to place him in Lichfield.
