Biography

Name: Catharine MORGAN Surname: Morgan Given Name: Catharine Sex: F Birth: 24 Jul 1723 in Amity Twp., Berks co., Pa. Death: 28 Feb 1801 in Towamencin Twp., Montgomery Co., Pa.

  1. 2 Catharine buried at Lukens-Tennis Cemetery, Towamencin Twp., Montgomery co., Pa.;
  2. 3 Catharine was the daughter of William Morgan, a tailor, and an emigrant of Wales, who had first settled in Amity, a township on the Skuylkill, eastward of Reading, in Berks co. Not satisfied with that region, Morgan sought another locality, to make a new home, and came to Hatfield in 1730, where he purchased the home of John Kennard. The locality is then mentioned as "near the township of montgomery"--- Hatfield then not having been constituted. His residence was a small house, partly of logs behind which rose an elevation, beyond which spread the plains of Hatfield, then esteemed quite barren and un-productive. A portion of his lands included this plains country, lying above the present line of the railway. Doubtless, he attended the Baptist Church, and listened to Benjamin Griffith. In the list of taxables of 1734, he was rated as owning 100 acres.

His will was written on the 10th of November, 1773. Eight children are mentioned in his will: Richard, Thomas, Andrew, William, Catherine, Judith, Mary and Margaret. The four daughters were all married, Catherine Tennis, Judith Ellis, Mary Robinson and Margaret Black. No mention of the mother of these children. [nrt]
