Biography

Calogero Morello was born in Corleone on 25 November 1892 at his parents' home on via Piazza, the son of peasants Giuseppe Morello and Maria Rosa Marsalisi. He was baptized on 10 December and was named after his paternal grandfather. His godfather was the unmarried Antonino Rizzotto.[1] His birth was reported by Carmela Cerniglia, the midwife, as Giuseppe had immigrated to America shortly before his birth.[2]

When Calogero was two months old, he and his mother immigrated with the family of Giuseppe's mother and stepfather.[3]

The family lived first in New York, then moved to Louisiana, and then to Texas, where members of the family contracted malaria.

Maria Rosa died in 1897 in Corleone. The cause of her death is not known.

Open issue: Calogero is sometimes reported to have died in Texas, and a brother with the same name born. In 1910, Calogero, called Charles, appears in the census with his grandmother and extended family. His reported age is fifteen, placing his birth in Texas in 1895.

In the 1910 Census, Angela Morello, age 60, lived in Manhattan, Ward 12, with her daughter, Dora (Salvatrice), 28, son-in-law Nazzio Lupo, 31, granddaughters Nufria, 4, and Angelina, 2, Rocco Lupo, her grandson, born that year, her son Joe Morello, age 42, daughter in law Lena Morello, 26, grandson Charles, 15 (b. 1895), who according to this record was born in Texas, granddaughters Angelina, 5, and Carmela, 1, son Vincent Terranova, 23, and daughter Rose Terranova, 17. Nufria, Angelina, and Rocco Lupo, and Angelina and Carmela Morello, were all born in New York. Angelina and her children and in-laws were all born in Italy.[4]

Calogero was killed in a gunfight in Harlem on 16 April 1912.[5] He is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Queens, New York.[6][7]
