Biography

John Morcom was of the family from Clowance Wood, Crowan, Cornwall. His father was in the employ of the St. Aubyn family who owned a manor and Clowance Wood. After the arrival of a new church curate these Morcom families of Crowan came to be spelt Morkam. This same curate also relieved at St. Martin, and again Morcom's in this parish also became Morkam. Some entries were corrected in the margin of the relevant Bishop's Transcripts, but Morkam has prevailed, also into the Census. In South Australia he was always John Morcom. John left behind seven sisters of the family, none of whom are thought to have immigrated. John has been described as "the only son", but had a younger brother Samuel, who died at Crowan as a toddler c26 March 1831

• Immigrated to South Australia, embarking at Plymouth 17th. July 1854 in the "Lord Raglan", arriving Port Adelaide 24th. Oct. 1854. Age stated on Passenger List as "24 years". Occupation stated as a "Miner".

John Morcome was accompanied by his wife Mary Ann, late Vial, nee Trewinack and his stepson [Mary Ann's son, Edwin Morcome [Vial ] aged 10 years , and daughter Mary Ann age 1 year.

Occupation stated on the St.George's Church Register Vol.1, 1848 -1872 , Woodford as a Mason. Residence: Home Park, Woodeford [Magill], S.A. OBITUARY: "The Chronicle" [Adelaide, S.A.] 2nd. Dec. 1911, pg. 45, column D. " John Morcom, of Norwood, died, only son of the late John Morcom of Clowance Wood, Cornwall aged 86 years."
