Jannetje's father Pieter Montfort was a Walloon Huguenot.
Jannetje's father was born in Valenciennes, which was then in the province of Hainault but is today in the French Department du Nord. His Protestant parents fled to Holland to escape religious persecution and then sailed with their son Pierre (and any other children still living)[1] on the Eendracht in 1624 with the very first settlers to New Netherland. The Montforts later returned to Amsterdam where Jannetje's parents, Pieter and Sarah de Plancken were married at the Walloon Church, and then that young couple returned to New Netherland in 1639.[2]
