Biography

Genealogically Defined
Gertrude (Miller) Kwiatek has Polish Roots.
Gertrude (Miller) Kwiatek was a Pennsylvanian.

Early Life

Gertrude A. Miller was a White female born on 6 January 1917[1][2] in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania to Franz Melnarowicz[3] and Stanislawa Melczak.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10] By 1920, when she was 35 months old, she lived with her parents, her older brother Frank Charles Jr., and her younger brother Joseph Frank[11] at 1302 Sarah Street, Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania.[4]

Between 1920 and 1930, her family moved to 49 Welsh Way, Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. By 1930, in addition to living with her parents, Frank Jr., and Joseph, she also lived with her younger brothers Sylvester Thomas, Anthony Edward, John Walter, Bernard Paul, and George. Her younger brother Walter had unfortunately passed away before the census as he was stillborn. Gertrude was recorded as attended schooling since 1 September 1929 and was able to read, write, and speak English.[5]

Gertrude had completed the first year of high school by 1940. She still lived at 49 Welsh Way in 1935 and 1940 with her parents and her aforementioned younger siblings aside from George. She now had four more younger siblings: Matthew Francis, Living Miller, Edward Stanley, and Living Miller. Frank Jr. and his wife Glenna Kyle Pendleton now lived in the residence, along with her grandfather Wawrzyn Melczak. She was listed as being unable to work with no other source of income.[6]

Marriage and Death

Gertrude married her husband Stanley Joseph Kwiatek on 4 August 1941 at Saint Adalbert's Church in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. The marriage license listed Gertrude as not having any transmissible diseases and was not classified as an imbecile, epileptic, of unsound mind, or under guardianship as a person of unsound mind, or under the influence of any intoxicating liquor or narcotic drug.[7][12] While married, she worked as a house wife and still lived at 49 Welsh Way.[1]

On 7 February 1944, Gertrude became hospitalized at Magee Hospital due to intestinal obstruction. She had two chronically draining sinuses in the left lower quadrant and right flank pain. She endured an operation which found there to be many fibrous adhesions and one obstruction. Ultimately, she succumbed to a large bowel perforation on 29 February 1944, which resulted immediately into peritonitis. She died on 11 March 1944 due to peritonitis.[1] Gertrude was buried at Saint Adalbert's Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 15 March 1944.[1][8][9][10]
