Early Life and Immigration

Franz Melnarowicz was a Polish male born on 12 July 1893[1][2][3] in Kaisersdorf, Sambor, Galicia, Austria[4] to Mateusz Melnarowicz.[5] Polish was his native tongue.[6][7][8] Much of his life before immigration is unknown. It is known that before he immigrated to the United States at 17 years old, he lived in Kaisersdorf, Sambor, Galicia, Austria and was single. He worked as a farm laborer.[5][9]

On 5 May 1910, he boarded Kaiserin August Victoria, a steamship, that departed from Hamburg, Germany.[9] He arrived at Ellis Island on 14 May 1910, having never visited the United States before. He was listed as being able to read and write, not ever being imprisoned for a crime or for insanity, not a polygamist, not an anarchist, not solicited for labor, in good mental and physical health, no deformity, and not crippled. He stood at five feet three inches, had fair skin, and had brown hair, with no distinguishing marks of identification. His final destination was to Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania to live with his brother-in-law Anton Regel at 154 1/2 Pius Street,[5] where he arrived on 16 May 1910.[4] After immigrating to the United States, he changed his name from Franz Melnarowicz to Frank A. Miller.[1][2][4][10]

Spouse and Family

Frank married Stanislawa Melczak[6][7][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] on 22 October 1913 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania.[4] Frank fathered thirteen children:

By 1920, he owned a house at 1302 Sarah Street, Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania with his wife; his children Frank Jr., Gertrude, and Joseph; Albert and Emilia Soszynska and their niece Marie Liczwek; and John and Isabelle Stueber, their stepchildren Isabella and Caroline Colbert, and Isabella's mother Isabella Spade. He was litsted as being able to speak and was in the process of signing naturalization papers. He worked as a laborer in a steel mill.[6]

By 1930, he owned a house worth $4,000 at 49 Welsh Way, Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania.[8] He lived with his wife and his children Frank Jr., Gertrude, Joseph, Sylvester, Anthony, John, Bernard, and George. He also rented the house to his father-in-law Wawrzyn Melczak (here listed as Lawrence), Wawrzyn's daughter Gertrude, his daughter-in-law Hazel, and his grandchildren Margaret and Donald. Frank did not attend school or college. He still worked as a laborer in a steel mill, though he may have been unemployed at the time of the census recording. He was still in the process of signing naturalization papers.[7]

In 1935 and 1940, Frank still lived at 49 Welsh Way with his wife; his children Frank Jr., Gertrude, Joseph,[11] Sylvester, Anthony, John, Bernard, Matthew, Living Miller, Edward, and Living Miller; Frank Jr.'s wife Kyle; and Stella's father-in-law Wawrzyn Melczak (here listed as Lawrence).[20] Frank's home was valued at $2,000. He was described as completing fourth grade in elementary school as the highest grade completed and did not attend school at the time of the census recording. He worked as a laborer at a steel mill in private work for 32 hours a week and worked for 47 weeks in 1939, making a salary of $1,399 a year. Though he was listed as a naturalized citizen in this census,[11] he officially became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America on 9 September 1941.[47] His occupation was listed as a "millworker" in 1945[36] and a"die setter" in 1946.[28]

Later Life and Death

By 1949,[13] he and his wife moved to 109 Stewart Avenue, Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania[34] and Frank worked as an employee at Oliver Iron Steel Corporation.[12] This was where he was listed as living in the 1950 census, along with his wife; his sons Lawrence, Edward, Bernard, and Joseph; Bernard's wife Martha Malkoski; Joseph's wife Mary Victoria Grabowski, his son David Joseph Miller, and his mother-in-law Amelia Grabowski;[19] and Marie G. Mahoney, her sister Marcella A. Butler, and Marie's niece Lois Butler. Frank worked as a laborer at a steel mill for 40 hours in the week previous to 8 April 1950. By the recording of the 1950 census, Frank's highest grade completed was listed as elementary school, eighth grade. He worked 40 weeks in 1949 and earned $2,050. No other members of his household contributed to the household income. He was also recorded as never serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.[13]

He lived at this residence with his wife until his wife's death on 28 April 1959, for which he was the informant.[14]

After 27 May 1960,[42] he lived at 432 Edith Street, Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania[10] and was retired from his laborer position at Oliver Iron Steel. More than six months before his death, he developed cerebral arteriosclerosis, and from that condition he developed cerebral thrombosis around 30 July 1964. On 5 August 1964, Frank died[2][3] of cerebral thrombosis at South Side Hospital, which was reported by his son Living Miller. An autopsy was also performed on Frank's body. He was found to have metastatic gastric carcinoma, which did not contribute to his immediate cause of death. He was buried on 8 August 1964 at Saint Adalbert's Cemetery[1] along with his wife and his son Edward.[2]

The only details known about Frank's parents are that his father was named Mateusz[5] and that they both were likely born in the same region as Frank (being listed as from Austria[6][7][13]), and natively spoke Polish.[6]
