Birth and Family

James (Jim) William Michaelsen was born on 9 Mar 1926 He was raised and lived in Kings New York from that day to when he joined the Coast Gaurd in June of 1943 (He Dropped out of HS his Senior year to "Join Up") in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA. [1] He was baptized in the Roman Catholic Faithon 4 April 1926[1] at St Brendan Church in New York. He is the Son of Thorbjørn William Michaelsen (1896-1980) and Helen Josephine (Dunne) Michaelsen (1897-1946). JIm had one older sister Helene E. (Michaelsen) Mann (1920-2005).

After the war, Jim returned to Kings, New York. Like many young men after the War he thought the Government still owed him a few things for his service! So he may have stretched his "Unemployment" just a little! He was a Tennis Instructor or a Ski Instructor. Of course, he was a Ski Instructor in the Summer and a Tennis Instructor in the Winters.

Jim did finally decide to get a Job(Especially after discovering that his new bride was in the "Family" way). Not wishing to go to work for his new Father-in-law on "Wall Street". he started working for Pan American World Airway at JFK Airport as an Assistant Manager in ticketing. Once with Pan Am, Jim's carrer "Took Off" litteraly and figurativly moving him all around the world.

Over the next 40 years Jim climbed the corprat ladder working his way up in Pan Am. Becoming one of the top executives in the company. When he retired in 1983 he was the Director of Operations for Africa, Souther Europe. and the Middle East. Jim was "Invited" to retire early (at age 55) soon after leadership (CEO's) of the company changed in the early 80's. All of this with only a High School GED he had gotten while in the Coast Gaurd.

Jim was a devoted Family man. After the passing of his beloved Sally in May 1999 Jim spent two years devoted to writing a book about his love. It was titled "My Travels with Sally", he only had a limited number of copies made and these were all given to his Children and Grandchildren. Other than his faimly he had many activies that he also loved, Playing Golf, Tennis, Golf, Playing the Organ, Golf Swimming, Golf, Hunting, Golf, Fishing (when the reel wasn't all fouled up) and did I mention Golf. Yes his true love after Sally was playing Golf, at the age of 80 he still had a 8 handycap.

Jim was 81 when he "Broke" his upper arm play tennis. He went up for an over head smash, and came down on a another Ball! Slipped, fell hard breaking his upper left arm! It was right after his recovery from this accident that he discovered he had cancer. Somewhere, someplace at sometime during the examination process Jim was exposed to Viral Flu and came down with it. It was this Viral Pneumonia ravaged his lungs in the end took his life.

Jim passed away surrounded by all of his loved ones. Per his wishes he was cremated and his ashes were spread at sea (In a grand floating family Irish wake) off the coast of Florida in the same location (and fasion) of his beloved wife Sally . This location is known only to the family.

Are you sure the USS Shebiogan is spelled correctly? I'm trying to find out the correct name (which includes the hull number) and can only find USS Sheboygan.

Thanks, Natalie, Categorization and Military and War Leader

Hello Natalie,

Sorry, I spelled it wrong but I have corrected it. It is spelled that way in Dad's separation DD-214 which is two of the Scanned images in his file that are viewable in the Public format. PF-57 was her Hull Number and there is a write-up on her in Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Sheboygan_(PF-57). If there is anything else I can do for you please let me know. Jeff M.

Well, the hull number goes into the category name, so you're almost there! Category:USS Sheboygan (PF-57), United States Navy, World War II. It was a USN ship until 1946, so during the war the category needs to be named as a Navy ship. If he served in the USCG, add a category for that Category:United States Coast Guard, World War II.

Thanks, Natalie
