Leslie McWhirter was born on September 5, 1901 in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois, United States, son of Charles McWhirter (<1874–1947) and Pearl Williams (1881–1974). Lessie died on July 4, 1974 in Centralia, Marion County, aged 72.
