Biography
Murdoch McLean was born in Scotland.
Murdoch was born on 24 April 1848 at Overgate, Dundee, Scotland[1]. He was the son of Donald McLean and Helen McKinnon, named for his father's father and the second son to be given the name.
At the time of the 1851 Scotland Census, he was living at Overgate, Dundee, Scotland with his mother Helen (30) and four siblings - John (15) who was a shoemaker, Mary (10) and Angus (6), both scholars and Isabella (6 months)[2]. He was aged 2. His father must have already been working on steamers as he is not found in this Census.
Murdoch McLean migrated from Scotland to Colony of Victoria.
He emigrated with his mother Helen (Ellen) and five siblings leaving Liverpool on 5 December 1857 on the ship Merchant Prince[3]. He arrived on 17 March 1858 at Melbourne. He was aged 9.
Murdoch had a falling out with his sister Mary Hargreaves on 8 November 1873. She took him to court for assault[4]. The evidence was:
... a disagreement took place between the parties, and during the scuffle complainant received several blows to the extent of which Dr Figg deposed. On the other hand it was said that complainant was a nuisance, and in order to get rid of her the father gave her £1 to go away. Complainant, however, would not go, and defendant had to push her out.
The case was dismissed.
Murdoch married Mary Jane Dunn on 10 November 1873[5] at the Presbyterian Church, Williamstown, Victoria. They had four children.
In 1905 he was a labourer living at 138 Melbourne Road, Williamstown, being on the Williamstown North, Melbourne Ports Roll[14]. His wife Mary and son Murdoch Junior, also a labourer, were on the same roll. By 1912 he was living at 17 Dover Street, Williamstown with his wife Mary[15].
Murdoch died on 27 December 1913[16] at 17 Dover Street. His funeral notice was published in The Age on 29 December[17][18]. Members of the Loyal Williamstown Lodge were asked to attend his funeral that morning at 11:00 from his residence. He was buried in Williamstown Cemetery, Williamstown[19].
