Biography

Isaiah McCartney is believed to have been born in Scotland , on 15 November 1776 to John and Margaret Clyde McCartney [1]

The death date on his stone says he was 67 yrs., 3 mos., 12, days at his passing. Calculation puts his birthdate 15 Nov. 1779.

Problematic Birth Place

Scotland as a birth place is given in Oscar Burtons book The Jackson Family History . I wonder if this is the correct. Oscar states in the genealogy that both Isaiah and his wife Lettice were born on the river Clyde in Scotland. This information was to have come from the bible of Mrs. E.J. Felgers a descendant of Isaiah's.

I am leaning toward the idea that Isaiah was actually born in Pennsylvania and not in Scotland. I don't believe that Lettice was born in Scotland. If John McCartney is the correct parent for Isaiah as the DAR application [2] suggests, I believe John was born prior to 1740 in Scotland. There is a John McCartney in 1746 in the Scotch Irish Settlement/Craigs Settlement in Northampton County, Pennsylvania long side Michael Clide/Clyde[3]. Michael and Bridget Clyde are believed to be Isaiah's grandparents, Margret ? according to the book by Oscar Burton married John McCartney. I beleive this to be Margaret Clyde sister to Lettice's mother Elizabeth Clyde.

Perhaps the the surname Clyde and the River Clyde were mixed up in the translation of the family story. This question needs anwsered- Why would a family who are in the Colonies long before the birth of their son, be in Scotland for that birth?

Marriage

Isaiah McCartney married Lettice Hudders about 1800 by Rev. J.B. Patterson, in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, source says Columbia County Pennsylvania, but in 1800 Columbia was not in existance. Lettice is the daughter of James and Eliza Clyde Hudders of Chester County, Pennsylvania. Lettice was born 15 May 1786 in Scotland/Pennsylvania. There will be more in Lettice's profile concerning her problematic birth place.[4]

Military Service

Isaiah McCartney serviced during the War of 1812 in Montgomery's Regiment in the Pennyslyvania Militia, he was a Sergeant.[5] The next find is a Land Grant that was Isaiah's for service in the war of 1812. In 1866. Lettice and Corneilus are selling the land grant to a Mr. Garret C. Maxwell. It states that Isaiah was a Lieutenant in Captain Bonds Company Pennsylvania Militia Mar 1812. This land was located in Kansas. The rest of the document can be found at Bureau of Land Management[6]

After the War of 1812, Isaiah and his family are still in Derry, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. [7]

In 1814 we find Isaiah and Lettice selling the land in East Nottingham Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA, that Lettice was bequeathed her by her grandfather James Hudders.[8]
