Ethel McCaleb, born on September 28, 1886, in Evening Shade, Sharp County, Arkansas, was the daughter of John Bell McCaleb and Nancy Almirah Abernathy McCaleb. In her early years, the 1900 census locates her in Piney Fork Township, Sharp County, Arkansas.

By 1910, Ethel had moved to Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas, where she worked as a stenographer at a law office. On June 5, 1912, she married Carleton Gayle Dent, marking the beginning of a lifelong partnership.

The 1920 census finds Ethel residing in Seattle, King County, Washington, with her husband Carleton. Returning to Batesville by 1930 and 1940, she continued to be an integral part of the community.
