Biography

Hannah Sophia May was born on 13 September 1828 in Hertford, Hertfordshire, England, the daughter of Joseph May and Hannah Morris ^[1], ^[2] and the sister of Elizabeth (Bessie) (May) Sanders, Lucy May, Margaret May, Maria May, Rachel Ann May, Edward May, Frederick May, Henry May, Joseph May, Thomas May and William May ^[3].

The family of thirteen left London, England on 26 May 1839 aboard the "Anna Robertson" and arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia, Australia on 21 September 1839 ^[3][4][5]. They settled at Mount Barker, South Australia, Australia.

Hannah was 25 years old when she married Joseph Barritt, a widower with 2 children, on 12 May 1853 at the Friends Meeting House, North Adelaide, South Australia, Australia ^[6][7] and their children were Lucy Maria (Barritt) Sandland, Walter Barritt, Ellen Mary (Barritt) Sandland, Edwin Barritt, Hannah Morris (Barritt) Williams, Francis M.C. Barritt, Herbert E Barritt and Edith Margaret Barritt ^[8].
