Biography
Cathal "Cú-cen-máthair" mac Cathaíl was from the Glendamnach sept of the Eóganachta dynasty. His father was Cathal mac Áedo Flaind Chathrach who died about 628, thus Cathal's estimated DOB "before 628." NOTE: Changed DOB to about 602 per Wikidata
Cathal was was an Irish king of Munster from about 661 C.E. until his death in 665. According to Wikipedia, Cú-cen-máthair means "motherless hound." Whether this sobriquet was a commentary on his personality as man or as monarch, it seems unlikely it was bestowed by his immediate family.
He had two sons - both of whom became Kings of Munster:
Finguine mac Cathail (who died in 696)
Ailill mac Cathail (who died 701)
He was followed as King of Munster by Colgú mac Faílbe Flaind of the Eóganacht Chaisil.
