Biography

According to Katherine C. Gottschalk, writing for The William and Mary Quarterly, Vol 10, (1930), Hudson Martin was a son of John Martin (will probated 5 Apr 1787) and the grandson of Henry Martin of Bristol, England, and his wife, Mary Sparkes, daughter of Richard Sparkes.[1] The William and Mary Quarterly, Vol 10, article reports two siblings, taken from the will of Hudson Martin: 1) Henry Martin, was in Eng, d s.p. & 20 Mary Martin; mar Matthew Vaughn.[1]

Hudson was a 2nd Lt. in the 9th Virginia during the Revolution.[2][3] He served as Lt. in 1776 and as paymaster of the guards in 1779.[4] He also served as deputy Clerk for Albemarle County.[3]

He married Jane (Lewis), daughter of Nicholas Lewis, on 2 Dec 1778 in Charlottesville, Virginia.[2][3] In the early 1790s, they removed to Amherst, near to Faber's Mills, where their descendants still live (as of 1901).[3] He wrote his will on 23 Jun 1828 and died sometime before it was probated on 27 Dec 1830.[5] A few years later, his widow Jane applied for a widow's pension on behalf of his service during the Revolution, and between the bible page she submitted and the details from his will, we have a very clear picture of their family (including her parents at the end):[2][5]

  • Hudson Martin was born July the third 1752 O. S.
  • Jane Lewis was born July the sixth 1759
  • Hudson Martin and Jane Lewis were married December the second 1778
From his will: All the remaining part of my lad I now live on I lend to my loving wife during her natural life, or widowhood, together with my remaining patent of mountain land containing [270 acres]... Received his inheritance prior to his father's will
Note: It has been claimed that Hudson Martin Jr. married Mildred Minor, daughter of Dabney Minor,[3] but this appears to have been his son Hudson. This Hudson married only once, to Mary Ann Hawkins, daughter of Edmund Hawkins and Mary (Mosby).[6][4]
    3. John Massie Martin son of Hudson & Jane his wife was born June the 23rd 1783 about 3 o'clock P.M.

Capt. Thomas Harris patented, on 25 Feb 1638, some 820 acres adjoining the property of Capt. John Martin, "with Sw. & marsh beg. at the little Cr. over against Capt. Martin, N on the backside of the Sw. E. S. E. into the woods towards Bremo ..."[7]

The William and Mary Quarterly, Vol 10, (1930):

This is an article on the ancestry of John Martin of England and Goochland County, Virginia, who was the father of Mary Martin who married Matthew Vaughan. As I understood the material in this article, Mary Martin's ancestry was as follows:

Henry Martin of Bristol, England, married Mary Sparkes, daughter of Richard Sparkes (born Withy Bush House, Pembroke, England, April 16, 1658) and his wife who, when she married Richard Sparkes, was the widow of Erasmus Carr. Henry Martin's parents were Roger Martin and Unknown Hudson, daughter of John Hudson.

Henry Martin and Mary Sparkes were the parents of John Martin whose will, proved in Goochland County, Virginia, in 1787, mentioned three children:

1. Henry Martin. He was in England when his father wrote the will, and is said to have died without issue on a voyage to or from England. 2. Mary Martin who married, before 1767, Matthew Vaughan. John Martin nominated to be his executors his "son Hudson Martin and son- in-law Matthew Vaughan" . 3. Hudson Martin. He was a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War. He married Jane Lewis, daughter of Nicholas Lewis and Mary Walker, daughter of Dr. Thomas Walker, the famous explorer. This Hudson Martin died in Nelson County, Virginia and his descendants are the only descendants of John Martin of Goochland County to have the surname Martin.

The will of John Hudson of the City of BristoI, EngIand, was proved October 13, 1725, and mentions his son-in-law Roger Martin, grandsons George and Henry Martin, granddaughter Mary Martin, great grandsons Hudson Martin and Roger Martin, and great granddaughter Mary Martin. The grandson Henry Martin was the father of John Martin of Goochland County, therefore, John Martin was the great grandson of the decedent, John Martin of Bristol.

So - Roger Martin married a daughter of John Hudson of Bristol , and had children George Martin, Henry Martin, and Mary Martin. This Henry Martin married Mary SPARKES and had children:

  1. The Rev. Mr. Hudson Martin (1711-1775) of England
  2. SPARKES Martin (died in England in 1787) married Martha
  3. John Martin (died in Goochland County, Virginia, ca 1787
  4. Henry Martin who was in Virginia by 1755. Died without issue. (FALSE!)
  5. Elizabeth Martin (died 1809) married Samuel PHELPS
  6. Mary Martin married John Hoare
  7. Catherine Martin married Capt. James JONES of England
  8. Frances Martin married Barrat BOWES of England

Source Lewis of Warner Hall ofa family and including the Genalogy of ... by Merrow Edgerton Sorley starting on page 604 After the Revolution, Hudson Martin and his wife settled on Rockfish River which forms part of the boundary between Ablemerle and Nelson Counties naming their home ;Little Castle Hill;. Hudson Martin became a prominent citizen of Ablemerle. serving for several years as a Deputy Clerk of the county and later as a Magistrate.Nor was he less prominent in the affiars of Nelson County when it was carved from Ablemerle- he became the first Sheriff of the new county. About 1800 the whole family removed to Faber s Mills, Amherst County; but apperently did not give up their connection with Nelson County. In the latter county Hudson Martins will was filed, and the estate was such a size that the executors were required to give bond for a sum of one hundred thousand dollars. The decendants of the Martin family resided largely in Nelson and Amhearst counties after the death of their mutual ancestor.

Section 7. Hudson Martin, a second Lieutenant in the 9th Virginia, during the Revolution. For a number of years he was Dep- uty Clerk of the County Court, and later on a Justice of the Peace. He married Jane Lewis the eldest daughter of Nicholas Lewis. About 1800 he moved to Amherst in the vicinity of Fabers Mills, where his descendants now live. In 1834 Captain John Thomas tes- tified before the County Court on behalf of his heirs, that Hudson Martin served in the Revolutionary Army. He was Lieutenant of the 9th Va. :
