After her father's death, Susannah, her mother, and most of her brothers and sisters transferred to Goshen Monthly Meeting from Chester Monthly Meeting, both in Chester County, on a certificate dated 03-30-1737. Goshen Monthly Meeting requested a member, John McCord, to find out why Susannah Martin Adams was absent from the meeting on 08-19-1754 and why she had not acknowledged her error in marrying out of the Society. He reported back at the meeting on 09-09-1754 that she could not attend the meeting and present her acknowledgment, because she had accompanied her husband toward Virginia and that she desired a certificate to Friends meeting in Virginia or “thereaway.” A certificate was granted to Hopewell Monthly Meeting or “elsewhere.”
In the “Hopewell Friends History”[1], it is recorded that on 09-09-1754, Susannah Adams of Goshen Monthly Meeting, Chester County, Pennsylvania, had gone with her husband, who was not a Friend, to Virginia with her Quaker membership certificate signed and directed toward Hopewell or elsewhere. Hopewell was in northern Virginia.
En route from Pennsylvania to North Carolina, William and Susannah Adams stopped in Bedford County, Virginia, for a time. Their first child, Jane (Jean), was born there in 1755. The Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy by Hinshaw, Volume 1, records that Susanna Adams was received by the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting in Orange (Almance) County, North Carolina, on 02-07-1756 on a certificate from Goshen Monthly Meeting, Chester County, Pennsylvania. William Adams was received into membership by the church on request 09-04-1762.
In 1787[2], William and Susannah Adams, with their children: William, Moses, George, John, Sarah, and Margaret, transferred their memberships to the Deep River Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina. Later in that year their son, Jonathan, followed with his family.
At the Quarterly Meeting held at Deep River on 03-13-1793, the Society of Friends established a monthly meeting at Deep Creek in Surry (now Yadkin) County for the convenience of those Quakers who lived in that area. William Adams, “Susana” Adams, and George Adams were on the list of the original members of the Deep Creek Monthly Meeting. They remained in the Deep Creek Meeting for the duration of their lives and were both buried at the cemetery there.[3] Susannah's death was recorded in the Deep Creek minutes.[4]
It is likely that the majority of Adams living in Yadkin County today are descendants of Susannah. Many of them still attend the Deep Creek Friends Meeting and an Adams Family Reunion is held there on the second Sunday of June each year.
It is curious that Susannah was not dismissed from the society during the almost 8 years between her marriage to William and his admission into the Friends Society. She must have been a special member for the elders to take such care for her - those of her children who married out of unity were not granted the same leniency! Her descendants must affirm, that she was indeed a special woman, as her progeny numbers over thousands of honest citizens who have helped to build our nation.
The children of William and Susannah were:
