Unfortunately it is extremely difficult to trace ancestors back to Ireland unless you have a pretty good idea of what county they were born in. And O’Neal is a fairly common name, so there are likely to be thousands of them spread out all over the country. This page (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:External_Resources_for_Irish_Genealogy_Research) will perhaps give you some ideas of sources that you can check just to get started, but you really need to find a way to narrow down what part of Ireland John came from. Can you track him down from his US citizenship application, or check passenger lists from ships from Ireland sailing anytime before 1860?
The Ireland Project, because our manpower is limited to volunteers, only adopts profiles that are either of historical significance to Ireland or that are fairly controversial and need to be watched over by the project so that incorrect information and/or incorrect family members don’t keep getting added to the profile.
I note that you say family lore indicates his wife was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian, but her parents on WikiTree do not appear to be native American at all so that legend, at least, would appear to be incorrect.
I wish I could be of more help to you. Best of luck on your search,
Jen, Ireland Project co-leader (this message was emailed to you but could not be delivered)

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.
Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

I sent you a check-in message a week ago about the Military and War Project to ask you about your continued involvement but have not yet heard back from you. Do you still want to be in the project? If I don’t hear from you by the same time next week I’ll assume that you’ve moved on to other things but you’re most welcome to re-join the project at any time.
Best wishes,
Mary~ Project Coordinator, Military and War Project
Mary I don't know what is expected of me. I don't have a lot of time anymore. I want to stay involved as I have a lot of kinfolks that was in the military. What do I need to do?
Greetings from the Military and War Project. We are doing the six month check-in with members.. Have you been active in the last six months? Please note that it is a requirement for membership in the Military and War Project that you respond to these check-ins. To make bookkeeping easier, just click Reply to this message on your own page, add your reply, then SAVE. I look forward to hearing from you..
Many thanks,

I sent you a check-in message several days ago about the 1776 Project to ask you about your past and continued involvement but have not yet heard back from you. Do you still want to be in the project?
If I don’t hear from you in a week or so, I’ll assume that you’ve moved on to other things, but you’re most welcome to re-join the project at any time.
We're doing our semi-annual check-in to ask whether you have made contributions to the project in the last six months?
Please note that it is a requirement for membership in the 1776 Project that you respond to this check-in. Please post your response as a reply to this message on your page, for convenience of record keeping.
Hi Vivian, a couple of weeks ago I sent out a check-in for the US Civil War Project, this is just a quick reminder to let me know if you intend to remain in the Project. Hope to hear from you soon. I'll assume your not interested if I don't hear back from you by the end of February. Thank you.
P Kreutzer, US Civil War Between the States Project Leader
What happened to all the names and information I had on my page of my relatives that served in the Civil War and other wars? They seemed to have disappeared.
Vivian I don't know what page your talking about, if it's your profile page only you can edit that. If its a space page on the US civil War project, you'd have to give me more detail. Then maybe we can track down what happened. I know I haven't removed anything from any pages.
Hi Vivian, I just wanted to thank you for all the work you've done to improve the US Civil War Between the States Project. I'm doing a check-in with all project members and wanted to verify that you're still interested in being a member of the project. Also, any suggestions for the Project would be welcome. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
P Kreutzer, US Civil War Between the States Project Leader.
Thank you so much for responding to our check-in. We are delighted that you wish to continue contributing to the Military and War Project. Below is a quick checklist for active members. The project leaders would like you to make sure you have done the following:
1) Checked the Project Page for ways to contribute.
2) Added MILITARY_AND_WAR to the tags you follow.
3) PMed the Project Coordinator with your email address to be added to the Google Group.
4) Bookmarked the Activity Feed to monitor the project watchlist.
It has been a couple of weeks since we contacted you about your participation in the Military and War Project and we are following up to make sure you wish to remain a member.
We understand that interests shift as we grow our shared tree and that some members may have moved on to projects more pertinent to the branches they are currently building. If this is the case for you, please let us know.
If we do not hear back from you within the week, we will assume you have moved on to other things for the moment and remove you from the project. Please know that you will always be welcome to rejoin should your interests shift back in this direction.
Thank you so much for your participation; we genuinely appreciate it.
On behalf of the Military and War Project Leaders, we are doing a six-month check-in with members.
First, we want to thank you for your past participation in the project. We appreciate your desire to honor your ancestors for their service to their countries, or even for your service, wherever in the world. We hope that your membership has enhanced your WikiTree experience.
Please let me know, by commenting on my profile or sending a private message, if you are still active in the project, and if so, in a general sense how you may have contributed to the main project or any sub-projects within the last couple months.
You first proposed and then rejected a merger of Marshall-10888 into Marshall-10285. I think your initial proposition is correct even though the date of birth differs in the month. If they are not merged, then the Waite-1957 should be removed as wife of Marshall-10285 IMHO.
Please take a look at Jeremiah Durbin's profile. I have attached a source with microfilm image of a widow's pension from the War of 1812 for Jeremiah Durbin. It gives his exact date of death. Also is the married name of his widow "Mary Durbin" and her maiden name, given as "Mary Muins" which is different than the name in the family tree which is "Polly Unknown." I think there is enough information to update Jeremiah's wife's profile. Do you agree?
There are category links to add to your ancestor's profiles and research links to learn more about your family. The Project is a good way to consolidate the WikiTree ancestors with historic connections to the years of 1773 (Boston Tea Party) to 1789 (ratification of the U.S. Constitution.) All patriot, loyalist, Hessians, French, Native Americans or any other profiles with a connection to these years should be linked to an appropriate category in the Project.
If you havent already, please set your preferences for your Tags Followed to include 1776 Project and any other tag terms that you wish to follow: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:Following
Some categories have a template (SAR) to add at the top of a biography. If not, add a category link by putting the category name such as Template:1776 for those who bore arms in the Revolution and Template:1776 for those who contributed patriotic or civil service. Thank you.
Vivian, ...when I proposed that merge, Adaline Mclehaney, I was actually working at something else, and saw the apparent duplications. I am not related to the profile in question. So beyond whatever sources are there, I am afraid I have to light to shine on the matter..... Sorry.
Hey Vivian. For the avast few days I've Ben talk if with Pat Bishop. She too has Mangum, Gilcrease, Hicks info. Have you connected with her? She's trying to help me learn WikiTree but I'm a slow learner... I'm going to try to figure out how to send her the newspaper article you so generously shared. Is that okay with you? I'm very excited about finding you and Pat. I've been researching this side of my family for years and haven't gotten far. I'm starting the Boston University Genealogy certification on the 10th. I've ordered a new computer which should arrive tomorrow. And I'll be attending IGHR the week of June 12th. I'm also planning to go thru my research and source it better (well scan the sources I've been collecting all these years). Thanks! Should have made this privat

1) read the project page which explains what to do https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Military_and_War
2) Find your potential Military Relatives,
3) Research sources to prove the relatives are actually military and thei unit they served in
4) After writing a biography with sources to prove this, Format Biography.
5) Add stickers and/or categories to the profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Military_and_War_Stickers
https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1254549/using-the-war-stickers-the-great-war
6) On the Project page 2/3 down the page is a red box for the correct sticker to use for each project.
7) The sticker should be placed below the Biography header.
And if you have trouble with stickers, you also can ask on g2g for help.
