Biography

John was the son of Thomas Manwaring and Mary (Keeney) Manwaring. ^{[1] [2]}
He had 7 siblings. Sister, Mary (m.Moore)

John married twice:
1st marriage to Mary Cordelia Caulkins on 23 DEC 1849 in Waterford, Connecticut.
They had 2 sons, Myron and Harvey. He was widowed in 1865.

2nd marriage to Mary E. Morgan.
They had 2 sons, _______ and Selden.

Like his father and grandfather, his occupation was a farmer. In 1849, he began farming on over a hundred acres, remaining about twenty years.

John then started a new occupation as a very courteous proprietor of a hotel in Waterford, the Oswegatchie House in Waterford, his hotel site, only a quarter of a mile distant. At that time the house was small, accommodating only fifteen or twenty guests. The house grew into a hotel situated on the east bank of the Niantic River, overshadowed by the Oswegatchie Hills, and accommodated from forty to fifty summer boarders. Besides the hotel and fine barns he had two cottages on the grounds.

He has been prominent in the town, serving as town clerk, Justice of the Peace thirty-five years and on the Board of Education thirty-three years, during twenty-seven of which he was secretary.

John was known to be of generous disposition and willing to share his knowledge and persons who sought his counsel and advice, always received what they sought. His very courteous nature brought the summer visitors back to his house/hotel year after year.

He passed away in 1906.^[3][4]
