Ellender Jane "Nellie" Manes was born in 1848^[1] in Bradley, Tennessee, her father, Claibourne, was 34, and her mother, Sarah, was 24. She had three sons and three daughters with William Henry Switzer between 1866 and 1879. She died as a young mother in 1879 in Searcy, Arkansas, at the age of 31.
