Biography

Giuseppe Mancuso is a peasant (contadino) born 14 February 1859 in his parents' home in strada Santo Rocco, Corleone. His father, Vincenzo Mancuso, age 50, villico, reports his birth. His mother is Antonina Pomilla, age 36.

Giuseppe (Josepho) and Giuseppa (Josepha) Cascio marry on 5 June 1884 in Corleone. Giuseppe is 25. This is the first marriage for either of them. Their parents are all living at this time.

Giuseppe and Giuseppa have at least seven children together:

  • Vincenzo, born 13 May 1885 (dies 16 September 1887)
  • Vincenzo, 16 September 1888
  • Giovanni, born 5 July 1891
  • Antonina, born 22 January 1894
  • Ciro and Antonino, twin sons born 1 April 1896
  • Leoluca, born 9 July 1897

See the Cascio Family Space for a short discussion on naming conventions.

The first son named Vincenzo is born and baptized 13 May 1885. His godfather is Andreas Rizzo, of unknown parentage.

Vincenzo dies at two years and four months of age on 16 September 1887.

The second son named Vincenzo is born and baptized 16 September 1888. His godmother is Rosa Manicchia, wife of Salvator Mancuso.

Giovanni is born 5 July 1891, and baptized Joannem on 7 July. His godparents are Leoluca Saporito and Leoluchina Latino.

Open issue: In this record, his parents are identified as Joanne Mancuso and Josepha Cascio. Giuseppe's Latin name is Josepho, not Joanne. I am still presuming that this is the right couple, unless I find another. Two reasons to consider this an error are: A) the high number of women named Josepha/Giuseppa Cascio in these records, and B) the traditional naming convention for sons has been followed for Vincenzo and Ciro, but is disrupted by Giovanni.

At the birth of Antonina 22 January 1894, Giuseppe Mancuso is 34 years old, living with his wife Giuseppa Cascio, also contadina, at 28 via Carcere, in Corleone. This birth record also notes that the parents are illiterate.

Antonina dies at one year and four months of age (b. 20 Jan 1894) on 13 June 1895 at 1:15 pm.

Ciro and Antonino are twins born the morning of 1 April 1896 and baptized the same day. Antonino's godparents are Antoninus Rotolo and Lucia Marsala. Cyrus' godparents are Cyrus Panzica and Blasia Rotolo. Both boys die at three days of age.

Giuseppe dies at the age of 45 on 28 April 1904. His wife Giuseppa survives him.[1]
