Charles was born in 1835. He is the son of Francis George and Sarah Blake (Sturgis) Shaw.[1]
He was a railroad executive, and foundryman.
Nephew of the poet James Russell Lowell (1819 - 1891)
Charles served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was made a Captain of the 6th U. S. Cavalry May 14, 1861; Colonel 2nd Mass. Cavalry, April 15, 1863; Brigadier General of Volunteers, Oct. 19, 1864.[2]
He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Cedar Creek. He died 20 Oct 1864.[1] He was mourned by a number of leading generals. There is a monument to Charles in Mount Auburn Cemetery.[3]
