James was apparently cruel to Maria and left her to live with another woman.
[5]
Maria appealed to Alexander Hamilton for help, and they ended up having an affair.
[5]
In December 1791 James started pressuring Alexander Hamilton for money to keep the affair quiet.
[5]
This eventually resulted in the publication of the Reynolds Pamphlet.
James and Maria divorced in 1793.
[4][6]Aaron Burr was her divorce lawyer.
[6]
She married Jacob Clingman on 6 August 1795 in Philadelphia.
[7]
They lived in East Nottingham, Cecil County, Maryland.
[4]
She and her husband went to England in 1797 after the Reynolds Pamphlet was published. [citation needed]
Maria was back in the US in the summer of 1800.
[8]
She was boarding with the Culp family at a farm house near the Schukylkill River.
[8]
She was apparently going by the name Mrs. Clement.
[9]
She was working as a housekeeper in the house of Dr. Mathieu.
[10]
She later married Dr. Joseph Mathieu before January 1807.
[11][10]
She died on 25 March 1828.
[11]
Her obituary in the 26 March 1828 edition of Poulson's American Daily Advertiser[11] reads:
