Biography

Children: Cijtjen (July 3 1631, witness Griet Jans), Dirck (April 7 1633, witness Lijsbeth Jacobs), Pieter (April 5 1635, witness Griet Jans), Lenaert (July 22 1637, witness Griet Jans, married Vroutjen Volckerts, went by Palenstijn), Annetjen (April 19 1639, witness Cornelismoer Jans), Grietjen (March 14 1644, witness Griet Jans), Sara (Oct 12 1645, witness Neeltjen Leenerts), Debora (Jan 1 1648, witness Neeltghen Lenarts; father Jan has last name Palestijn).

At the time of their marriage, Jan lived on Torenstraat and Aeltjen on Hoornse Veer.

Jan's baptism witness was Tijalle Hermansdr. His mother, listed in as Rijck Jansdr, is a writing error in the original document.

This is under the assumptions that Pietertje's children's baptism witness was their grandmother Aeltjen Jans, and that Jan's and Aeltjen's child Pieter was actually a girl. This kind of thing happened in records all the time at this time period: Pietertjes called Pieter, Cornelisjes called Cornelis, Jacobjes called Jacob (it's the most obvious in the "mother" records when they're listed there with "male" names). There was no Pieter Jans fathering a child named Lenert at the right time. Also, both the names Dirck and Pieter didn't appear in the immediate family as male names.

Jan was a goldsmith, sometimes Enkhuizen’s assayer of gold and sometimes its “deken” (coverer?) off and on from 1641 to 1664. In 1664 he is listed as Jan Lenertsz Palensteyn, all others as Jan Lenertsz.

There was a Jan Leenertsz Palestijn marrying an Aefjen Teunis in 1660. At first I was concerned that Aeltjen Jans had died by 1660, our Jan Leenertsz remarrying and disproving our Pietertjen Jans being a Palestijn. But this Jan and Aefjen had children through 1680, so he wouldn’t have been our Jan Leenertsz. He was most likely the son of our Jan’s son Leenert.
