Biography

"Logansport Pharos-Tribute", September 10, 1890

Mr. Arthur Leffel, one of the oldest residents of Bethlehem township, was stricken with paralysis on Saturday, followed by another on Monday. His condition is quite serious.[1]

"Logansport Pharos-Tribute", October 4, 1890

Death of Arthur Leffel
After a four week's illness, Arthur Leffel, aged 73 years, died of paralysis last night at 8 o'clock, at his home in Bethlehem township. The funeral will be held at the Bethlehem M. E. church Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock.
Arthur Leffel moved to Cass county from Ohio over thirty years ago and settled on the farm where he died. He leaves a wife and six living grown up children and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. He was kind and affectionate in his family, charitable and generous to all and held in the highest esteem by the entire community in which he had lived for a third of a century and no man ever passed from earth to heaven leaving fewer enemies behind. He will be greatly missed, not only by his relatives but by all who know him. He has earned his reward and has gone to receive it.[2]

A Pioneer Gone
The Rochester Sentinel speaks thus of the recent death of Arthur Leffel of this county:
Indiana pioneers are falling before the sickle of death in rapid succession and ere many years the fathers who laid the foundation for our prosperity and pleasant surroundings will all have answered the final roll call on earth. The subject of this sketch was born in Ohio 73 year and two months ago and located in Cass county, Indiana, nearly fifty years ago always residing in the vicinity where he died, at Bethlehem church. He was widely known for his hospitality and benevolence and the doors of his commodious home were ever ajar to his fellowmen, while his purse strings were ever loose to the poor and needy. The esteem in which he was held was attested by a gathering of friends to pay the last tribute of respect, which exceeded in numbers any like assembly ever witnessed in that section of the county.[3]
