Biography

Ludwell Lee was born on October 13, 1760 in Westmoreland County, British Colonial Virginia. He was the son of Richard Henry Lee and Anne Aylett. He married Flora Lee and they had children: Matilda, Ann Cecelia and Richard Henry Lee. He married second Elizabeth Armistead and they had a daughter Mary Ann. Ludwell died on March 25, 1835 in Belmont, Loudoun County, Virginia and was buried in the Saint James Episcopal Cemetery Leesburg Loudoun County, Virginia, USA[1]

33. LUDWELL [LEE][2] [5], the second son of Richard Henry Lee (Thomas, Richard, Richard), and of Anne Aylett, his first wife, was born at "Chantilly" on "Monday the 13th of October, 1760, at 12 o'clock in the night, and was christened by the Rev. Mr. Ross on Sunday, the 26th of October, 1760. His proxies were Richard Lee, Esq., Doctor Arthur Lee, and Miss Elizabeth Steptoe." (Family Bible of R.H. Lee) He died at his home, "Belmont" in Loudoun, on the 23d of March, 1836.

Lee was educated in England and France, as shown by the extracts from letters of his uncle, Dr. Arthur Lee, given in connection with Ludwell's older brother, Thomas Lee. ...

Ludwell Lee was twice married ; first, about the 23rd of January, 1788, to his first cousin, Flora, daughter of Philip Ludwell Lee and Elizabeth (Steptoe) Lee, of Stratford, by whom he had three children. He was married, secondly, in 1797, to Elizabeth, daughter of Bowles, and Mary (Fontaine) Armistead, by whom he had six children. He resided first at "Shooter's Hill," near Alexandria, and later at "Belmont," near Leesburg. His first wife died and was buried at "Shooter's Hill;" her "tomb was to be seen there prior to the late civil war" (Rev. Joseph Packard, D.D.). He was buried at Belmont.

By his first wife Mr Lee had three children:

  1. i. RICHARD HENRY[8]. See 44.
  2. ii. CECILIA[6], born in 1790 ; died ___ ; married James L. McKenna ; no issue.
  3. iii. ELIZA MATILDA[6], born the 13th of September, 1791 ; died the 22d of January, 1875 ; was married, in 1811, to Richard H. Love, of Fairfax county, and had six children ; of these, [1] Ludwell and [2] Thomas died young. [3] Richard Lee, born in 1815, died in 1855 ; entered the U.S.N. ; married Martha Ann Pearson. [4] Cecilia Matilda, married in 1844, Major Lewis Addison Armistead, U.S.A. She was born in 1823 and died in 1850. [5] The last son was General John Love, U.S.A., of Indiana, a graduate of West Point, who was born in 1820 and died in 1881 ; he married Mary F. Smith, and died without issue [error - he had a dau Mary]. [6] Their last child, Flora Lee Love, married the Rev. William Johnson, of the Episcopal church, at whose home Mrs. Love died.

By his marriage with Elizabeth Armistead, Ludwell Lee had six children:

  1. iv. MARY ANN[6], born 8th of April, 1798 ; married General Robert B. Campbell, of South Carolina.
  2. v. ELLEN MCMACKEN[6], borh 5th of April, 1802 ; married twice ; first, Thomas Bedford, of Kentucky, and had one child ; secondly, in 1844, the Rev. Nathaniel Phippen Knapp, of Mobile, Alabama, and had: [1] Ludwell Lee, born in 1845, died in 1883.[2] Caroline Frances, born 1st of July, 1847 ; married, 9th of January, 1873, the Rev. John Richard Joyner.
  3. vi. ELIZABETH ARMISTEAD[6], born 23d of March, 1804 ; "entered into rest at the residence of Rev. J.R. Joyner, Berlin, Worcester county, Md., 23d of May, 1887, Mrs. Elizabeth A. Selden, in the 84th year of her age ; daughter of the Hon. Ludwell Lee, of "Belmont," Loudon county, Va., and widow of the late Wilson Cary Selden, of "Exeter," near Leesburg, Va."   4. vii. EMILY[6], born _____ ; died in 1875, unmarried.
  5. viii. FRANCIS LIGHTFOOT[6], born _____ ; died _____ ; married a Miss Rogers, of South Carolina, but had no issue.
  6. ix. BOWLES ARMISTEAD[6], born _____ ; died _____, unmarried. A cadet from Virginia of his name entered West Point in 1828.

Ludwell Lee made a noncupative will, on the 18th of March, 1836, leaving some silver and a few slaves to his daughters, Ellen and Emily ; some silver to his "son Dr. Lee." This will was attested by James L. McKenna and Edmund I. Lee.

Slaves

In the 1830 census Ludwell held 24 enslaved people in Cameron, Loudoun, Virginia.[3]
