Henry was born on November 25, 1825, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [1][2] He was the son of Furman Leaming and Hannah (Ludham) Leaming. [3] By 1860, Leaming has 4 children and is a merchant. [4]
On May 20, 1849, Henry Leaming married Ellen Jones. [3][1] In 1850, Henry and Ellen Leaming are living in Randolph Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. They have a new-born daughter, Sarah. Henry is a farmer. [5]
On October 12, 1861, Henry Leaming enlisted in Company C, 40th Regiment, Indiana Infantry. At the Battle of Stones River, Leaming, now a Major, assumed command of the 40th Regiment when Lieutenant Colonel Elias Neff was wounded. (Lieutenant Colonel Neff had assumed command of the regiment when Colonel Blake was found to be intoxicated and unfit for command. [6] On June 30, 1864, Leaming was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. [7] At the Battle of Nashville, Lieutenant Colonel Leaming commanded the 40th Regiment. [8] On May 1, 1865, Leaming was promoted to Colonel in Command of the 40th Regiment. On December 21, 1865, Colonel Leaming mustered out of service along with his regiment. [7][9]
Henry Leaming passed away on March 23, 1899, in Lafayette, Indiana. [1] He was buried at Romney Cemetery, Romney, Indiana. [2]
Henry Leamings letters written home to his wife from the War, were published. [10][11]
For Decoration Day (now called Memorial Day) 1868. a poignant letter written by a young girl to Colonel Leaming was published.: "Col. Leaming - Will you please put this wreath upon some rebel soldier's grave? My dear papa is buried at Andersonville, and perhaps some little girl will be kind enough to put a few flowers on his grave. Jennie Vernon" The wreath was place on the grave of an unknown Confederate soldier, the only one remaining in the cemetery. [12]
