"...The Thunder-being told Red Thunder: 'With this weapon the tribe shall expand and be mighty. So you go back to your people and teach them to make bows. Hereafter you can shoot buffalo.' "Lakota Legend [1]

Biography

Walutawakinyan, son of Chief Mato Ite (1800-1870) and Sota Winyan, was born in 1827, in the territory of South Dakota.[2]

Red Thunder, and his five brothers, Hemaza "Iron Horn," Mato Ite "Bear Face", Itonagaju "Rain in the Face," Pakakoga "Shave Head," Mato Cigala "Little Bear," lived and fought during this time. They won victories at the Battles of the Rosebud and Little Big Horn (known to Indians as the Battle of the Greasy Grass). Red Thunder traveled with Kill Eagle to the Little Big Horn.[3] Alas, their defeat was inevitable and the proud people of the Black Hills were confined to smaller and smaller reservations. Wakinyan Luta and his brothers were located at the Standing Rock Reservation.

Wakinyan Luta "Scarlet Thunder" was on a "List of Indian Prisoners, September 1876"[3]

"According to Kill Eagle, Scarlet Thunder was a Hunkpapa from Iron Horn’s band. Assuming this is the correct family, he had two sons that were not reported in the Dec. 1876 census – One Who Kills An Enemy (age 18) and Black Bird (age 11) – who may have remained in the northern village. Red Thunder was a brother of the Hunkpapa headman Bear Face to whose band he transferred in 1877."[3]
