Biography

Johann Valentin Kuhn was a son of Samuel Kuhn and Magdelena Berthen. He was born at Hüttengesäß (13 km northeast of Hanau) and baptized at Langenselbold on 4 June 1690. The family emigrated to New York, where in 1710 his family appeared on the Hunter lists of Palatine migrant settlers. In 1711 Johann Valentin was among the Palatine soldiers who served in an expedition to Canada.[1][2]

He lived for some time near Red Hook or Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York. On 11 March 1726 he (recorded as Velten Koon) was taxed in the North Ward of Dutchess County, but was unable to pay.[3]

He married Anna Catharina Wies or Weis in New York by 1711, based on Johanna’s baptism.[4] Their children, as identified by Doherty, were:[5] Jones (1985) proposes both Anna Catharina (third child, born 1715) and Catharina (sixth child) as daughters of Valentin with marriages to Ephraim Weller and Anthony Poucher respectively. [6]

  1. Johanna Elizabetha Margaretha, born 1 November 1711, baptized at West Camp, New York. She married Jacob Drom.
  2. Anna Elizabetha; married John, son of Hendrick and Willempje (Oostrum) Buys. Jones doesn’t suggest John Bois’ father.[7]
  3. Anna Catharina, born 21 November 1715, baptized in Schoharie, New York. According to Henry Jones' Palatine Families of New York, she married Ephraim Wheeler.[7] Doherty says that they settled in the Beekman patent in Dutchess County, New York, and she died 22 May 1794. The Koon-Coons genealogy presented a different interpretation, indicating that this Anna Catharina married Anthony Poucher and that the Catherina Kuhn who married Ephraim Wheeler was a daughter of Conrad Kuhn.[8] Doherty cited both interpretations and endorsed Jones' theory that this woman married Ephraim Wheeler, noting that the first son of Ephraim Wheeler and his wife was named Valentine.
  4. Samuel, born 2 June 1718; married Elizabeth Loscher (Lasher).
  5. Henrich, married Maria Susanna Hoffman[7]
  6. Catharina, married Anthony Poucher.[9]
  7. Jacob; married Maria Kohl; they settled in Columbia County, New York. Jones recommends searching records of their children.[7]
  8. Peter, baptized 9 April 1727; married first Lea Kohl and second Elizabeth (Benedict) Barnum. Jones mentions only first wife.[7]
  9. Johann Hermann, born 21 August 1732 at Athens, New York; married Catharina Kreisler. Jones points to children’s records.[7]

Anna Catharina died some time after May 1741, when Velde Coen and Cathrina Wies were recorded as sponsors for a baptism in the Lutheran church in Red Hook, New York. After her death, Valentin Kuhn married Catharine Manck (or Mauk) as his second wife.[10] In the article "The Wife of Johannes Kreisler," David Kendall Martin placed the date of this second marriage as "probably between 1743 and 1752, certainly by 1757."[11]

  9. Considering the unlikelihood of the family naming a second daughter Catharina while the first daughter of that name was living, and in view of Doherty's comments regarding Anna Catharina, the connection to this daughter must be considered tentative. Jones proposes both Anna Catharina and Catharina as daughters of Valentin, with marriages to Wheeler and Poucher, respectively (above).

Kuhn-1781 and Kuhn-63 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates, same wife. Has been set as an unmerged match for nearly 2 years. No conflicts to prevent a merge.
