Joseph Kitchen was born in about 1788 in Greenwich Twp, Sussex, NJ, son of Samuel Kitchen and Elizabeth Hixson.
Joseph resided on a tract comprising 152.472 acres situated alongside Little Fishingcreek in Northampton County (later Greenwood Township, Columbia County) which would become nicknamed within the family as "Fertility". Following his father's death in 1824 and his mother's death between 1824–1830, he inherited a portion which he sold to his sister Sarah Kitchen and her husband William Ikeler on December 9, 1829.[1]
