Joseph moved to Preston, now Griswold, Connecticut, in 1706 after selling his lands in Salem to Isaac Peabody. The town of Preston was so named in 1687. In February, 1702/3, he and David Boardsman purchased a farm of 1000 acres on the Pachang River in Connecticut. In 1715 his brother Thomas bought 150 acres of adjoining land. The Kinney burying ground is on the dividing line between the farms of Thomas and Joseph. Hence each is buried upon his own land, with many descendants. In 1886, the Glaago Post Office was located upon this site. In 1718 and 1722, Joseph represented Preston in the General Assembly. He was a Captain of Colonial Troops, with the 2nd Company of Trainsband of Preston in 1729. He was in the early French and Indian wars.
