"Gordon Maury Kingman, 96, peacefully returned home to join his beloved wife of 67 years, May Louise Kingman, in the early morning hours of July 30, 2016, at Hospice of the Piedmont Hospice House in Charlottesville, Va. Maury was born in Washington, D.C. on June 14, 1920, the only son of Gordon Maury and Frances N. Wingate Kingman. His early years were spent in Northern Virginia with his older sister, Katharine Maury Kingman and his younger sister, Frances K. Terrell, who preceded him in death. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a self-taught Electronics Engineer. Maury had a gift for linguistics, was fluent in French, and could read several languages. This skill aided in his travels around the world both for pleasure and professionally. Maury was a 65-year member of the Masonic Lodge as a Master Mason. He was also a great lover of classical music and played both the guitar and violin. In his retirement years in California, he became quite an accomplished violin-maker and craftsman, constructing over 30 violins and bows. He enjoyed studying history and found particular pleasure in finding how his own ancestry fit into the story. It was this connection to his historical family that brought Maury back to his final resting place in Keswick, Va. His dedication and love for his family was apparent when he spoke of his two children, Matthew Maury Kingman, of Hong Kong, and Yvonne Louise McGee, of Hudson, N.H.; his eight dear grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Maury is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Alice Kingman; his son-in-law, Michael R. McGee; a sister-in-law, Maxine Babcock; a half brother, Robert Kingman, and several nieces and a nephew. A special thank you to all of his many friends, especially Pascal, his wife Yasmin, Mark and Lesley for their kind and loving support. Friends are invited to join the family for a celebration service on Monday, August 29, 2016, at 10 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church in Keswick, Va. with a burial service following.Memorials in his name will be graciously accepted by Hospice of the Piedmont, www.hopva.org and Grace Episcopal Church."
