Biography

Jo (King) Walpole was a New Yorker.

Jo Winslow King was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1874,^[1] the daughter of Isaac Garrison and Eliza Lufkin (Dennison) King. She was the eldest of 4 children and the only girl; a brother, Roger Pote King, died in infancy in 1888.^[2]

At the time of the 1880 census, she lived in Freeport, Maine, with her mother, the head of the household, her two younger brothers, an aunt, and a great-aunt, as well as one servant. ^[3]

She attended the Rhode Island Normal School, a training school for teachers, graduating with the class of 1896.^[4] She was hired as a teacher at the Forster School in Somerville, Massachusetts, in 1899. She taught the 5th grade.^[5] She lived at that time in neighboring Medford, Mass. ^[6] In 1903, she was a teacher at the Mary Hopkins School in North Adams, Massachusetts.^[7]

She married in 1905 to Benjamin Monroe Walpole, son of Benjamin and Emma (Chafee) Walpole. They settled in Warwick, Rhode Island, where they raised 5 children,^[8] including a son named Robert Pole Walpole, evidently in honor of the brother she had lost when she was young.

Jo died sometime after the 1940 census.^[9] Family Search suggests she died on September 16, 1955, but offers no sources at this time.
