Biography

Elizabeth King was born in Derbyshire, England.

Elizabeth was born before 1851. She was the daughter of James King and Sarah Dimock, and she was baptised at St Michael's Church on 2 October 1851 in Derby, Derbyshire, England. The family were living in Queen Street (Bull's Head ^[1]) at this time and her father was an Innkeeper. ^[2]

1861 census: Bulls Head, 7 Queen Street, Derby, Derbyshire. Elizabeth was 9. Father James 40, Maltster and Innkeeper and mother Sarah 46. Siblings, Hannah 18, Mary 16, and James William 6. Also a General Servant Judith ? 38, and a House Servant Henry Piggots 15. ^[3]

1871 census: Bell Hotel, Saddler Gate, Derby. The family moved to the Bell Hotel about 1865 however Elizabeth's mother Sarah died in 1868, and her father James 50 was a widower and now a Hotel Keeper. Elizabeth 21, is still at home and likely working with her father in the Hotel. The hotel had nine Servants living there and working in various roles. ^[4]

1881 census: The Bell Hotel, Saddlergate, Derby. Elizabeth 29 was an Assistant to her father James 60, Hotel Keeper. James has two more Assistants and 10 other Staff in various roles living and working in the Hotel. ^[5]

James retired and moved to Kedleston Road, Derby about 1886 and likely Elizabeth went with him. However it was reported in the Derby Daily Telegraph on 28 April 1887 that Elizabeth, the only surviving daughter of J F King died at Kedleston Villa, Kedleston Road on 24 April 1887 aged 35.^[6] Elizabeth's death (age 35) was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1887 in the Derby district.^[7]
