KING, 84, of Land Harbor Drive, a commercial artist, died yesterday at South County Hospital, Wakefield.</line><line /><line>He was the husband of the late Ida S. (Sargent) King. Born in Newport, a son of the late William A. and Robena (MacGinnis) King, he lived in Charlestown for 14 years, previously living in Jamestown and Narragansett.</line><line /><line>He was a graduate of Pratt Institute, New York City. He began his career writing and illustrating comics for Marvel Comics. He moved to Jamestown in 1945 and became art director for Lawrence & Brooks Advertising Agency. Later, as a freelance artist, he worked as a designer and illustrator for various agencies, businesses and publishers. As a cartoonist, he was a frequent contributor to the New Yorker magazine.</line><line /><line>He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member and past president of the Jamestown Lions Club, and the Providence Art Club.</line><line /><line>He leaves a daughter, Lois K. Winn of Narragansett; two sisters, Vera Alvanas of Norwell, Mass., and Robena Anthony of Hanson, Mass.; a brother, Harold King of Norwell, Mass.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.</line><line /><line>William was a commercial artist.</line><line /><line>He served as a Chief Petty Officer and hydrographer in the US Navy during WWII.</line><line /><line>He attended Pratt Institute in New York City.</line><line /><line>He was employed by Timely Comics in New York City in the early 1940's.</line><line /><line>After moving to Jamestown RI he was employed as an Art Director.</line><line ><line>He was a member of the Providence Art Club, a member and past president of the Jamestown Lyons Club, and was a published author.
