Biography

Ezra was as born May 27, 1697[1] son of Samuel Rice (1667-1713) and Abigail Clapp (1675-1713) [2]

(IV) Captain Moses Rice, son of John Rice (3) was born in Sudbury, October 26, 1694, married Sarah King of Sudbury, November 16, 1719, and removed to Worcester about 1722, with her brothers Ezra and Peter King. Rice opened a public house on the site on the one afterwards kept by Captain Ephraim Mower on which was subsequently erected The United States Hotel, the present site of The Walker Building. He was on garrison duty at Rutland, with others from Worcester, in 1724, in Captains Wrights company. He commanded a company of Cavalry while he lived in Worcester. He removed to Rutland about 1742. He purchased two thousand two hundred acres of land in Charlemont, Massachusetts April 23, 1743, and finally settled on it. [3]

Neither the marriage of Ezra nor the births of any of his children are entered in the Sudbury vital records. However, several of the births are found in the Worcester vital records.

  1. Abigail King (1720-1745)[4]
  2. Jonus King (1722-1746)[5]
  3. William King (1724-1793)[6]
  4. Mary King (1726-1803)[7]
  5. Ezra King (1728-__)[8]
  6. Silence King (1729-1812)
  7. Experience King (1731-1731)[9][10]
  8. Elisabeth King (1732-1767)[11]
  9. Adonijah King (1734-1755)[12]
  10. Beulah King (1735-__)[13]
  11. Nehemiah King (1737-1738)[14][15]

Ezra Rice King was killed on 14 January 1746 at Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. [16]

Research Notes

NOTE for descendants of this line that Ezra King and Silence Rice were double 2nd cousins as their paternal grandparents were both composed of a Rice brother (sons of Deacon Edmund Rice and Thomasine Frost) marrying a King sister (daughters of Thomas King Jr. and Anne Collins). Ezra's paternal grandparents were Samuel Rice and Elizabeth King and Silence's paternal grandparents were Thomas Rice and Mary King. Descendants of this line can still share a fairly high amount of DNA with their distant cousins.

Land Record

On 13 April 1764, the heirs of Ezra King sold 16 acres lying partly in Brimfield and partly in Monson which was "all that part of the thirds of Ezra King's estate" -- in other words, the 1/3 of his real estate that was set off to his widow for her life.[17] The deed was executed by:

  • William King of Brattleborough, New Hampshire, husbandman
  • Charles Barker of Templeton, Massachusetts, yeoman, and Mary Barker his wife
  • John Bond of Rutland District, Massachusetts, and Silence Bond his wife
  • Cyrus Rice of Deerfield, Massachusetts, husbandman, and Elizabeth his wife
  • James Peirce of Templeton, Massachusetts, husbandman, and Beulah Peirce his wife
  • John Barret of Hinsdell [Hinsdale], New Hampshire, husbandman and Eunice his wife
  • Mindwell King of Brattleborough, New Hampshire, spinster
