Biography

Marriage

The marriage record recorded, "State of Tennessee, Wilson County } To any regular Minister of the Gospel having the care of souls or any justice of the peace for said County Greeting. By virtue of the full power and authority in me vested I hereby authorise and empower you or either of you to celebrate & perform the rites of matrimony between Ransom King and Addy Rogers and join them together as man and wife in the Holy state of Matrimony he having given bond & Security as the law directs: Given under my hand at office this 8th of April 1816. Jno Allcorn CWC."[1]

Census

In 1800, in Montgomery County, North County, Ransom King was enumerated as the head of the household. In his household were two free white males under age 10, one free white male, age 10 thru 15, one free white male, age 26 thru 44, three free white females, under age 10, one free white female, age 26 thru 44. The total number of household members under age 16 was six. The total number of household members age over 25 was two. The total number of household members was eight.[2]

Deeds

On 13 August 1772, Bute County, North Carolina court minutes recorded that a deed from Joseph King to Ransom King (a minor) was proved by the oath of Joseph John Williams a witness thereto and on motion, the same is ordered to be registered.[3]

Revolutionary War Soldier

Ransom King was a soldier serving in the Revolutionary War for American Independence from England, receiving a pay voucher recorded at Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina, on 14 Oct 1783.[4]

Migration

Goodspeed's HISTORY OF TENNESSEE, documented the early settlers of Wilson County, and surrounding counties, after 1799. Ransom King was one of those early settlers of Wilson County, on the Cumberland River.[5] Ransom King had migrated here from Montgomery County, North Carolina, where he was listed in the 1800 census of Montgomery County.[6][7]

Wilson, Tennessee, Deeds

By 1819 Ransom King had purchased 405 acres from John Dunn on the Cumberland River lying at Spring & mouth of Cedar Creeks on the Cumberland River, Wilson, Tennessee, witnessed by his son Thomas W. King and his son-in-law John Ashford.[8] This is where Ransom's daughter, Polly "Jinsey" King who married John Ashford was also living for several years, for in July 1819, Ransom King deeded to John Ashford for five pounds fifty acres, where John Ashford now lives, part of the tract that Ransom King bought of John Dunn.[9]
