Sylvia was one of the people I interviewed when I was putting together my history of the Maringouin Peninsula. Her father, Clarence King had a store and gas bar near Pecks Cove. Here is what I wrote from our conversation in 2006: "She said that as early as 13 years of age, she would help out at the store, taking orders, pumping gas and making change. She recalled that the store was essentially a converted room in the house, probably the dining room. No sign was posted outside, but everyone knew it was there. Patrons entered through the kitchen, usually stopping to chat before entering the shop to do business. It was simply laid out, with a large table for the counter, scales and a cheese wheel, and some shelves for dry goods. There was a desk in the corner that held the till. The store mainly sold non-perishable items – sugar, oatmeal, molasses, kerosene, smoked kippers and deviled ham, canned goods (corned beef and tomatoes were popular), and of course tobacco and candy. It was not what you might call busy. With a small and dispersed population, getting to the store took some effort, and no one had much money anyway, so casual shopping was not common. Often, when someone knew a neighbour was going to the store, they would put in an order." Thank you, Sylvia.
